LETTER OF THE PRÓ-HAITI COMMITTEE TO THE GOVERNMENT AND OF FRANCE Dear Sirs and Madams: This committee, formed by political and social organizations, human rights institutions, labor unions and others, and civil society, shows its repudiation for the indifference with which France treats the Haitian appeals for returning the money that Haiti has paid for its independence. The “compensation” demanded by France, in 1814, for the lost of properties, being the black slave part of it, has been, since the beginning, 150 million gold-francs and, later, negotiated for 90 million of the same currency, amount that, updated, represents today US$ 22 billions, enough to reconstruct the whole country.
